TORCH Conquers RHEPC '14

Saint Louis College The Louisian TORCH once again conquered the Regional Higher Education Press Conference after ranking first both in the individual and group categories with total scores of 136 and 340 respectively held at Oasis Country Resort, City of San Fernando, Dec. 4 – 6, 2014.march2015 rhepc

Elona Joyce Lozano, a BS Civil Engineering 5 student, emerged as first in the highest individual pointer after winning gold both in Comic Strip (English) and Literary Graphics (English) and 4th Place in Editorial Cartooning (English). Joining Lozano in top ten individual highest pointers is Doven Gardon (BS Architecture 2) at 4th place after winning first place in Editorial Cartooning (Fil) and 5th both in Comic Strip (Fil) and Literary Graphics (Fil).

In the individual category, Immanuel Munar and Julius Cezar Barnachea (DevCom Writing) and Ray Allen Dumale (Lay Outing) bagged first place while Jake Villanueva (Poetry Writing – Fil) and Narcy Lyn Vendillo (News Writing – Fil) grabbed second and third place respectively. Torch Editor-in-chief Lea Lorraine Bautista emerged 4th place in Feature Writing – Fil while four staffers namely Arnel Barroga (Sports Writing – English), John Carlo Manabat (Editorial Writing - English), Christopher Maynes (Opinion Writing - English) and Dominic Canonizado (Photojournalism - Fil) placed 6th. Moreover, Barnachea placed 8th in Photojournalism – English and Chinque Gallejo placed 9th in Feature Writing – English.march2015 rhepc1

Meanwhile, TORCH entries in the tabloid, magazine, newsletter and folio clinched a total of 22 trophies (8 first, 6 second, 5 third, 1 fourth and 2 fifth places) from various group categories in news page, editorial/opinion page, feature page, literary page, DevCom page, Sports page layout, cover design, theme and content.

march15 rhepcSLC remained as the best performing school in Region 1 for Campus Journalism but after being the over-all champion for seven straight years and was given the Hall of Fame award last year; thetitle was given to the school next in rank which is Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Mid La Union Campus Voice.

Dr. Ruby Banez, the new adviser of TORCH, commended the efforts and sacrifices of all the staffers who worked hard for the said tilt.
"We had reaped the fruits of our sacrifices and I am proud of these students for giving their best knowing that we had a stressful week on the 4th CICM Meet before this," said Dr. Banez during an interview.

Top five winners in all events will proceed in the Luzonwide Higher Education Press Conference to be held at Pulsar Hotel, Tuguegarao City on February 5 – 7, 2015.
