SLC prepares future Louisian teachers through Practice Teaching Readiness Seminar

Future Louisian teachers took a big step toward the classroom as the Teacher Education Program rolled out its Practice Teaching Readiness Seminar Series on August 18–20, 2025 at the SLC Social Center. The three-day seminar brought together fourth-year pre-service teachers for interactive sessions and activities that sharpened their teaching strategies, boosted their confidence, and deepened their passion for the vocation. Thanks to the teamwork of the Future Educators’ Organization (FEO) and the Internship Officers, the event ran smoothly and gave students the preparation they need as they gear up for their practice teaching journey.

The opening day commenced with an invocation, followed by an inspirational message delivered by Dr. Marilou C. Mondina, Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Technology, and Education. This was succeeded by the orientation of the Course Enrichment Subject and discussion of house rules by Dr. Rhonalie B. Apilado-Dumo, Program Head of Teacher Education. The sessions of the day included a lecture on the importance of mental health, time management, and self-care by Dr. Apilado-Dumo, and a presentation on reflection journal writing by Mr. Jose Ricardo A. Dela Cruz. These initial discussions emphasized that while the journey of practice teaching may be demanding, balance, wellness, and reflective practice are vital for pre-service teachers to thrive as 21st-century educators.

The second day highlighted themes of professionalism, curriculum competence, and inclusivity in education. Among the key speakers was Dr. Juner Windel M. Valdez, Educational Program Supervisor of DepEd Region I, who expounded on the Revised K to 12 Curriculum. This was followed by a session on personality management and professional image facilitated by Ms. Marie Lara Pauline Bobier, faculty member of the Languages Department. In the afternoon, Mr. Justin Ian N. Ogoy, Research Coordinator of the School of Advanced Studies, discussed classroom-based action research, while Ms. Claudine C. Ponce, Head of Kindergarten and SPED in the Basic Education Schools, presented on inclusive education. These discussions reinforced the notion that teachers must not only master their subject matter but must also embody professionalism, inclusivity, and scholarly growth.

The final day centered on practical tools and strategies essential for effective classroom practice. Mr. Allen Christian Borja, Assistant to the Principal for Pupils Affairs (Elementary), introduced digital tools and platforms that enhance teaching and learning. This was followed by a session on innovative assessment, questioning, and feedback strategies delivered by Mrs. Florence Sobremonte, Assistant to the Principal for Student Affairs (Senior High School). The day concluded with a lecture on classroom management for diverse learners presented by Mr. John Carlo A. Manabat, Department Head of the Social Sciences in the Basic Education Schools. The seminar was formally closed with the awarding of certificates to all participants.

The Practice Teaching Readiness Seminar Series served not only as preparatory training but also as a significant milestone in the professional formation of SLC’s pre-service teachers. Through the lessons on innovation, inclusivity, research, classroom management, and professional growth, the participants are now better prepared to undertake the responsibilities of practice teaching. As they advance to this critical stage of their training, the College is confident that they will embody the values of competence, compassion, and commitment—hallmarks of educators who are indeed shapers of the future.
