Beyond Ethics Approval: Sustaining Research Integrity through Quality Review and Post-Approval Monitoring

The key members and reviewers of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) recently participated in a seminar-training facilitated by Dr. Emmanuel D. Batoon, Chair of the Research Ethics Committee of the University of Santo Tomas last Friday, October 17, 2025 at the SLC Mini-Amphitheater, CEA Building. The seminar covered foundational principles of ethical research review, including strategies for conducting rigorous and quality evaluations, the essentials of post-approval monitoring, and an in-depth discussion of common challenges encountered during the review process.

This capacity-building initiative is part of the REC’s semestral commitment to strengthening the ethical and methodological competence of its members under Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 11 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). The activity underscores the Committee’s role not only in safeguarding research participants but also in ensuring that knowledge production within the Institution meets the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. By continuously upskilling its reviewers, the REC affirms its commitment to the praxis of epistemic responsibility and its dedication to fostering a research culture rooted in responsible knowledge practices and informed ethical judgment.
