A Community United for Solo Parents
Solo parenting is not just about raising children alone—it’s about carrying the weight of an entire household, making daily sacrifices, and finding the strength to move forward despite life’s challenges. In today’s fast-changing society, more families are headed by single parents who face economic struggles, emotional burdens, and a lack of access to necessary resources. Understanding these challenges, Saint Louis College (SLC), through its School of Advanced Studies, launched Panagdur-as Dagiti Agmaymaysa A Nagannak: Pagtagamtan Iti Narang-Ay A Panagbiag (Empowering Solo Parents for a Better Life).
From October 1 to December 16, 2023, this extension program transformed the lives of 25 solo parents in Baccuit Norte, Bauang, La Union, providing economic opportunities, health and legal support, and a stronger sense of community. The project was made possible through partnerships with the Provincial Government of La Union, Lorma Medical Center, the Municipal Social Welfare Office of Bauang, and the Barangay Council of Baccuit Norte. Various SLC departments, including the Father Conrado Dela Cruz CICM Community Legal Aid Clinic, Oracle of Psyche, Basic Education Schools, and Social Action Center, also played a key role in this endeavor.
Understanding the Challenges of Solo Parenting
With over 15 million solo parents in the Philippines—most of whom are women—the need for targeted interventions is undeniable. A comprehensive needs assessment conducted by SLC students revealed key challenges:
- Economic Struggles – Many solo parents lacked stable jobs or capital to start small businesses, despite previous livelihood training.
- Health and Well-being – Chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes were common, aggravated by stress and financial difficulties.
- Education Concerns – Parents struggled to support their children’s schooling, especially in Math and Science.
- Legal Barriers – Many were unaware of their rights under Republic Act 11861 (Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act) and needed legal guidance.
Recognizing these pressing needs, the Panagdur-as program introduced holistic solutions to uplift the lives of solo parents.
Creating Sustainable Livelihoods: The Kabute-han Project
To address financial instability, the Kabute-han Project: Alay Pangkabuhayan provided hands-on training in oyster mushroom farming—a sustainable and profitable livelihood. Each participant received 250 mushroom fruiting bags and a dedicated mushroom house was set up to ensure the project’s success.
With this initiative, parents gained new income-generating skills, reducing their dependency on irregular jobs and providing them with a path to financial independence.
Prioritizing Health and Mental Well-being
Beyond financial challenges, the project acknowledged the mental and physical strain experienced by solo parents. The Nurturing Mental Well-being Project provided counseling services, stress management sessions, and a spiritual renewal mass, helping parents rediscover inner peace and resilience. Through the support of Lorma Medical Services and the Provincial Government of La Union, vitamins and medical assistance were also provided to ensure better health.
Empowering Through Legal Awareness and Support
Many solo parents struggle with legal issues such as child custody, financial support, and access to government benefits. The Empowering Solo Parents: Legal Aid Project provided free consultations in collaboration with the Father Conrado Dela Cruz CICM Community Legal Aid Clinic and DSWD representatives.
Participants gained legal knowledge on their rights under RA 11861, received assistance in processing documents, and found new confidence in advocating for themselves and their children.
Education and Community Support: Building a Brighter Future
Recognizing the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty, the program included:
- Tutoring sessions in Math and Science for solo parents’ children.
- Educational games to make learning engaging.
- School supply distribution in collaboration with local businesses.
Meanwhile, the Rag-o ken Ragsak, Awatem Kadi! Project brought holiday cheer by providing Noche Buena packages and fun community activities, reinforcing the importance of social support and shared experiences.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening the Future of Solo Parents
The Panagdur-as program proves that change happens when communities unite. With a perfect rating from program participants, its impact is clear: solo parents now have better financial opportunities, improved health, and greater legal knowledge.
Moving forward, continued collaboration with local governments, NGOs, and schools will be key to scaling up initiatives like the Kabute-han Project, legal aid services, and health programs. The dream is for more communities to replicate this holistic, SDG-aligned model, bringing hope and empowerment to solo parents across the Philippines.
As one solo parent shared, “For the first time, I feel seen and supported. This program has given me and my child a fresh start.”
With compassion, collaboration, and innovation, we can serve, empower, and uplift together.
