Driven by the call for sustainability and environmental responsibility, third-year BS Criminology students from Section B transformed the Verbist Building and its surroundings through a campus-based initiative addressing waste disposal, hygiene, and green space development. Guided by Atty. Diric V. Galanto, MPA, Academic Dean of the College of Law and Criminal Justice Education, the project reflects the students’ commitment to making environmental stewardship a visible and lasting part of campus life.
To enhance the campus atmosphere and encourage green living, the students developed a landscaped garden at the Verbist Building area. This green space not only adds natural beauty to the surroundings but also creates a peaceful environment for learning and reflection. It stands as a living symbol of the students’ commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable practices.
Complementing this initiative was the implementation of a comprehensive waste segregation program. Color-coded and clearly labeled bins for biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable waste were strategically placed on every floor of the building. This system aims to instill responsible waste management habits among students and staff, reinforcing a culture of environmental discipline throughout the Criminology Department.
To address hygiene and proper facility use, the students also installed informative signage in all comfort rooms within the building. These signs serve as daily reminders to practice cleanliness, proper sanitation, and mindful use of shared spaces—an often-overlooked but vital aspect of environmental responsibility.
These initiatives were made possible also through the leadership of Sunshine Marie Estolas, Kathlene Mae Rafanan, Angel Jhaztine Caalim, and Ericka Deanne Mabanes, with the support of AFLE Adviser Ms. Aprilyn O. Cariaso and Mrs. Agnes G. Munar, Secretary of CLCJE.
Through this project, the criminology students demonstrated that meaningful change could begin within the walls of their own institution. Their initiatives not only improved the physical environment but also laid the groundwork for a lasting culture of environmental stewardship within Saint Louis College.
